Much of the world just celebrated Christmas, the holiday of giving. There are many age-old themes, traditions, and religious connotations to Christmas, and a primary theme behind the holiday is giving. Every year, many people mobilize on Christmas to give. Some people give by volunteering their time. Others give by spending time with loved ones. Most give by sharing meaningful gifts with family and friends. No matter what Christmas traditions you practice, the message of giving is prominent for most.
Giving Feels Good
To give something of value to someone else is an act of love, respect, service, and appreciation. By doing these things and giving in these ways, we share our time, abilities, good fortunes, and presence with those that benefit from it. Giving is a noble act. It feels good to give something to someone else. In general, it just feels good to do good. Do you think that’s just a coincidence? Of course not!
Taking some time every year to be intentional about the act of giving is huge attitude booster. You could give by volunteering your time at a food drive. You could give by donating to charity. You could give a meaningful gift to your mother or father. There are many ways to go about it. As long as you give without the expectation of receiving something in return, you are doing the right thing.
Make the World a Better Place
I believe that everyone is interconnected in a giant network, sort of like a massive spider web. Charitable acts have a net positive effect on that spider web. By uplifting, celebrating, and giving to other people, you spread happy feelings of joy and cheer to everyone adjacent to you and beyond. You quite literally make the world a better place.
For the remainder of this holiday season, take some time to reflect on giving. Look at it like making a tiny dent in the universe by elevating the mood of those that receive your gifts. As we enter 2022 and start a new chapter for our families, careers, relationships, and personal development, consider the ways you could give on a regular basis.
Giving doesn’t have to be a burden. Some of the best things we can give are free. Calling an old friend is an act of giving. So is visiting an elderly relative. Holding the door for someone at the post office is another example. Make giving a normal part of your daily life. You will make others happier and improve the world around you.
